Have you been wondering how you can achieve the best balance, stability, and maneuverability on your equipment? If so, consider swivel lock casters. If you’re not sure what a swivel caster is, let’s get into what you can expect and discuss some of the types of swivel locks you may prefer for casters.

Swivel Casters

Swivel casters with lock components allow you to make swivel casters rigid, so they operate as if they are a fixed caster. This means that the wheel can go from moving freely to moving in a single direction, accommodating different needs and environments. These casters are a bit more expensive than fixed casters or typical swivel casters, but the ability to lock the caster provides you with more commercial and industrial applications.

Types

There are three common swivel casters with locks that are available – welded-on locks, hand-activated locks, and foot-activated locks. Each type has different applications and while some can be installed on your own, others may require factory installation.

Welded-On

Welded-on locks are usually only available when a new caster is purchased. They’re expensive and not as common as other types of locks. They aren’t field-installable, either, so you won’t be able to make adjustments on your own.

Hand-Activated

Hand-activated locks can be used with casters that you already have available. They need to be locked using your hand, so it may not be preferred in industries where the hands are used during operations. They’re very common, though, and more cost-effective than welded-on locks.

Foot-Activated

Foot-activated locks are very popular and only need to be pushed with your foot to be engaged as well as disengaged. The price of these locks is comparable to the aforementioned locks, making them an excellent middle-ground for businesses that want cost-effectiveness as well as convenience.

When looking at swivel casters, you have several options available, so it’s essential to assess your needs and determine which caster is right for your business.
